This section presents brief outlines of research studies and investigations that have demonstrated the importance of creativity for profit and success. Evidence ranges from creativity in the individual through to the characteristics of high performing organisations and economies.
What is Creativity?
Psychologists define creativity as the capacity within individuals to develop ideas for the purpose of problem solving and exploiting opportunities. Within this definition, ‘capacity’ refers to a skill or talent that can be developed and ‘problem solving’ and ‘exploiting opportunities’ refer to it being a part of everyday life.
It lies at the heart of advancements in science, technology, business, the arts and society. Some have argued that creativity is humankind’s ultimate resource.
- “Creativity is the single most important leadership trait.” (IBM Global Survey of CEO’s 2010)
- “Innovation is the number one priority for 72% of companies.” (Boston Consulting Group 2010)
- “We assume that 50% OF OUR REVENUE in 5 years time must come from sources that do not exist today. That is why we innovate.” (Ernst & Young Connecting Innovation to Profit Report 2010)
